Thinking about escaping to the Algarve? Portugal's coastal town of Sagres is known for their amazing surf, dramatic sea-carved cliffs, pristine beaches, and remote feel. It's quickly becoming a great destination for digital nomads with plenty to offer remote workers. Listed below are the best places to stay, coffee shops, coworking spaces and things to do in Sagres.

Where to stay in Sagres

Downtown Sagres

In the center of Sagres, you'll find a small main square called Praça da Républica. Lined with beautiful cobblestone streets, this area is home to the majority of restaurants, bars, and hotels. It's also within walking distance to a couple of Sagres' beaches: Baleeira and Poças. This is also where Outsite Sagres is located.

Praia do Tonel

Situated just outside the town center is Praia do Tonel. With views of the fortress of Sagres, Cabo de São Vincente (the southernmost point in Europe), and beautiful cliffs against the sea, this part of town has arguably the most beautiful scenery in all of Sagres.

Praia do Beliche

A bit off the beaten path is Praia do Beliche. Access to the beach is for the brave via steep wooden steps down. The views are undoubtedly worth the effort to get there, but just be aware if you're carrying things or have limited mobility.

Santo António

Nestled between the center and the sea, is Santo António. Here you'll find Ponta Ruiva - Telheiro, stunning beaches easily accessible by car.

Vila do Bispo

This charming Algarve village is a quiet neighborhood with narrow streets, white washed houses and great restaurants. Many town services (eg. health center, fire station, supermarkets) are located here.

Digital Nomad Communities in Sagres

The digital nomad scene is smaller here, but certainly growing. The Algarve Digital Nomads FB group is a great tool for connecting with other digital nomads in the area and learning about helpful resources here.

Coworking Spaces in Sagres

Currently, other than Outsite Sagres, there are no co-working spaces in Sagres. There is, however, another co-living space called CoWork Surf.

Best cafes with Wifi in Sagres

  • Laundry Lounge
Looking for a bar/cafe where you can throw a load of laundry in while you sip on your coffee? This a great little spot popular among surfers and freelancers. Come by in the mornings for daily rooftop yoga classes.
  • The Hangout
This is another popular spot to grab a bite and get some work done. Enjoy everything from coffee to pizza, and sometimes live music in the evenings.
  • Caffe Espresso
This cafe offers a great selection of coffee and pastries, and açaí bowls. Their wifi is fast and free.

Best Beaches in Sagres

  • Praia da Mareta
Situated just five minutes walking outside of the main square, Praia da Mareta is unsurprisingly one of the busiest beaches around. Fortunately though, this beach is plenty big enough spanning almost 800 meters around.
  • Praia do Martinhal
With beautiful cliffs towering over the sea, Praia do Martinhal features very emblematic views of beaches in the Algarve. The beach itself is sandy, on the smaller side, and a bit of a ways off the main road.
  • Praia do Tonel
Plan a visit here if you're into breathtaking views and big waves. This beach feels wild and remote and is very popular among surfers.
  • Praia de Belixe
Surrounded by cliffs that protect it from the Algarve's high wind and add to its beauty, Praia de Belixe lies within Costa Vicentina's Natural Park.

Yoga studios in Sagres

  • Yoga Sagres
Every morning at 9, Yoga Sagres hosts drop in classes on the rooftop of the Laundry Lounge. Classes are in English and run for 10€.
  • PFM  Yoga
Located in the Memmo Baleeira Hotel Sagres, and known for their retreats, PFM Yoga also offers daily yoga classes either on the beach or inside their ocean front studio.

Shopping and groceries in Sagres

Grocery Stores

In Vila do Bispo, you'll find both Intermarché and Spar.

Health Food Stores

Also in Vila do Bispo, is Izzy's market, is a vegan/vegetarian breakfast and lunch spot that also sells fresh produce and vegan products.

Getting around Sagres

While Sagres itself is on the smaller side, having access to a car is definitely preferable. Beyond Sagres itself, The Algarve has some amazing places to offer, and having the flexibility of a car will allow you to see much more of the area. With that said, taxis, Ubers, and Lyfts are available, and there is a bus that runs through the Algarve and stops in Sagres.

Visas for Portugal

For US citizens, no visa is required for stays under 90 days. For Europeans, Portugal is part of the The Schengen Area, making it extra simple for citizens from Schengen Area counties to travel to Portugal.

How to get to Sagres from Lisbon

There is a direct bus from Lisbon to Sagres, and vice versa. The drive takes 3 hours 30 minutes on average.
