Day Trips from Ericeira
Peniche is a unique seaside city peninsula about an hour north of Ericeira. Aside from being a prime surf spot with huge waves, this fishing town is charming and has plenty to explore. It's also a great place to get your seafood fix. Check out the Peniche Fortress for some history. Off the coast of Peniche is a set of tiny islands that make up the Berlengas Natural Reserve. Take a boat over and check out all the unique wildlife. You can even snorkel or scuba dive here to see the marine wildlife up close.
Sintra is a must see, and it’s only about 30 minutes away from Ericeira. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site that’s breathtaking whether or not history is your thing. The city filled with palaces, castles, and other amazing historical architectural structures. Pena Palace and Castelo dos Mouros are two of the most famous ones to explore. The whole area is truly magical, and it has a totally different vibe than Ericeira or Lisbon. Praia de São Julião and Praia da Foz do Lizandro are just south of central Ericeira, and are favorites among surfers as there is consistently big swell. Praia da Foz do Lizandro has a really big sandy area as well which is great for sunbathing. Further north are Praia dos Coxos and Praia de São Lourenço, which–you guessed it–are also great for experienced surfers. At all of these beaches you can find surf rentals and usually beach chair and umbrella rentals, as well.
